Security Tags / EAS FAQs
-
(EAS) Electronic Article Surveillance systems are highly effective for retail security tagging solutions when installed correctly and are managed by the store colleagues. Our many years of experience provide all the support you need to make the correct decision.
-
Acousto-Magnetic (AM) Systems:
Magnetic tags are attached to clothes and have a strip of amorphous metal inside. When an active tag goes through the sensors at the store exit, it vibrates at a certain frequency. The system detects this and sets off an alarm if the tag hasn’t been turned off at checkout.
Since the system only reacts to active tags, it helps cut down on false alarms so you only get alerts when there’s a real chance of theft. This makes Acousto-Magnetic security systems a simple and reliable way to protect your stock.
Radio Frequency (RF) Systems:
RF tags work a bit differently. They have a small circuit that sends out a radio signal when passing through the detection gates. If the tag is still active (not switched off or removed), it triggers the alarm. These tags are usually smaller and can be hidden in labels or stickers, so they don’t get in the way but still keep things secure.
-
In most cases we work with your electrician or maintenance team and many RF technology, security tagging/detection systems can be installed outside of trading hours. We provide a 12-month parts and labour guarantee and very attractive post warranty support package. EAS is virtually maintenance free.
-
A EAS tagging system normally consists of two components, hard tags or labels. Historically hard tags are applied to clothing and other soft items. Although not impossible to remove, a hard tag provides a high level of deterrent. A lanyard is available to apply tags to bags etc. They are removed at point of sale. Labels are used on packets, boxes and over hard goods. They can also be applied at source or at a warehouse. The labels are deactivated at the POS and remain on the product. We can advise the best protection for your merchandise.
-
Yes. All of our systems can be connected to a network. We can include footfall counting, remote servicing and alarm data. We also have systems that have built in advertising functions. Engage with your customer as they walk in the store entrance.
-
EAS tags are deactivated by a special device called a deactivator or detacher, usually located at the store’s checkout. When the tag passes over or through this device, it either magnetically or electronically disables the tag’s security feature.
-
A EAS system is mainly for stopping theft (loss prevention solutions) - it sets off an alarm if a tag isn’t removed or deactivated.
RFID technology (Radio Frequency Identification) is slightly different. It uses radio waves to track items for a retail business. It’s not technically an EAS, but RFID systems can be used in a similar way and also helps with stock management.
