A sharp increase in book lending to children and a massive surge in online use, as reported in the CIPFA public library survey (2008/09), highlights the continuing relevance of libraries. Roy Clare, MLA Chief Executive, said: "The MLA welcomes the CIPFA annual public library survey. The figures highlight the challenges faced by local government today and how much more work is to be done to maintain and modernise the country’s changing library service. "Local government is facing very tough budget choices as they plan for the future but many councils are developing their library services in modern ways taking full account of changing social needs and the joined up contribution libraries can make to building stronger communities and extending life long learning. The MLA’s publication Sharper Investment for Changing Times addresses head-on the challenge facing local authorities with practical suggestions for the future, and best practice advice. The MLA is working with local authorities up and down the country to help them look at ways of delivering more for less. "We recognise that research and evidence are the foundation of good decision-making designed to help local authorities understand the impact their library services make to the public. The MLA is working with CIPFA and other bodies to review and develop the ways that data on libraries is collected, aiming to ensure the information is relevant, timely and can help to lead improvement."
